Millicent O’Conner was a humble little girl when she was young. She loved her family, friends, Teachers, even strangers, and overall God. Millicent had a spelling contest bee. Millicent had been practicing for over three weeks. She would practice some words with dad every night before bed.
Today she believed she was ready not only her but her dad too, so did her mom. Millicent got ready and went down for breakfast. “Good morning Millie,” mom greeted. Leonard, her brother, chuckled from the couch. Millicent thought it was weird for mom to call her Millie, and Leonard thought it was funny. “Good morning,” Millicent answered forcefully. After breakfast of oats and milk, Millicent started her journey began with her two best friends. Soon they were at the front door of the school. Millicent, Brielle and Cinder, practiced the spelling words together too and were pretty sure they were ready for whatever would come that Friday. Millicent and the rest had only a week to get ready. The girls skipped along and danced and sang on their way there.
Five minutes later they were standing in all the chaos. That is what going to a public school brought them, clearly not their faults. Millicent walked in ready for a smooth day, but things didn’t go as planned. In the afternoon around after fourth period, Mrs. Chelsea called Millicent to the office to speak with Mr. Platinum. “Good afternoon, Millicent,” he began. “You have been called to the office to be let out of school today,” he continued not letting Millicent greet him back. “It appears your brother has had an accident, and you need to meet him and your parents at a hospital.” Millicent’s heartbeat fast. Hospital? Leonard? She questioned herself. Mrs. Chelsea escorted Millicent out of the building and waited for mom with her.
When Millicent entered the car mom drove off as fast as she could. Not talking the whole way when they got into the hospital mom started talking to the receptionist about Leonard’s room and stuff and Millicent didn’t seem to understand what they were saying.
She looked around; she saw a bunch of old ladies and men. And little kids, she saw a boy who appeared to have a bead stuck in his nose and a boy with a pencil tip in his ear, it was funny looking at them crying and whining to their moms about how much it hurt. Millicent spotted a young girl getting in through the sliding doors and she sat on a wheelchair with a nurse pushing it behind her. She had a lot of tubes on her and cannulas on her arms. She looked lonely and like she had been here a while, because most of the nurses greeted, and waved at her as she passed by. Mom grabbed Millicent and dragged her to the room before she could even start thinking of how to befriend the poor child. Mom and Millicent went into the room only to see a funny looking Leonard he had his leg hang up and his face bandaged. He looked just like a mummy in the hospital gown; Millicent couldn’t hold her laughter and giggled a little bit. Leonard just had a minor fracture and a deep cut on his chin. Mom said he had to stay for a couple of days which meant, more visits to the hospital than usual and more staying in a peaceful home.
Mom and Millicent were sent to the waiting room because Leonard had some more checkups to be done. Nurses and doctors and weird patients walked past them. Millicent heard one of the nurses talking through all the noise. “Tracy Browne is having her last dose and no more. We have done all we could.” Millicent figured they were talking about the wheel chair girl who was battling cancer. It appeared she was in the next room from Leonard’s. A few hours later, they were back at home. Millicent was getting ready for bed and Mom was making them a quick dinner of quesadillas. Millicent was so hungry she ate it all quick. Mom cleared the table and Millicent brushed her teeth and went to her bed. Millicent lay there in bed with her eyes wide open. Thinking of what Leonard was doing. And how Tracy was cooping, she then wondered how it all happened mom didn’t tell her. Millicent wanted to know so she listened carefully to see if mom was still awake. Then she tip-toed across the hallway and by Leonard’s empty room, then she made her way down to mom and dad’s room. She peered through the room where she found mom on her bed cross-legged reading her bible…
